When it comes to the supply of certain categories of medication – POM-VPS and NFA-VPS – all AMTRA SQPs (Suitably Qualified Persons) are required by law to satisfy certain obligations. In the Code of Practice, it states 'sufficient information should be gained from every customer to ensure that the right product is prescribed.' This is to ensure safe and effective administering and to minimise the risk of resistance. An SQP must always:

• be satisfied that the person who will use the product is competent to use it safely;
• advise on any warnings or contra-indications on the label or package leaflet;
• provide advice on the safe administration of the product;
• be satisfied that the person using the product intends to use it for an authorised use;
• supply the product specified in that prescription.

Whether you're trying to obtain flea treatments, wormers or pharma products, SQPs should ensure that you understand how to administer the product for maximum effectiveness and minimisation of resistance as well as for safety. An SQP must confirm that the products being supplied to you are for exclusive use in your animals and will not be sold on. You will be encouraged to weigh your animals to ensure you are administering the correct dose and, where it regards grazing animals, encouraged to make appropriate use of worm egg counts before dosing with wormers.
